[[for anyone who was curious, this is what I was typing for 3a.m. in class on Friday]]
Her crystal blue eyes shimmered despite the surrounding darkness as she frantically searched for something to focus on. Knowing not how she had come to arrive in such a desolate land, an understandable panic arose, chilling her pale skin. All perception was lost in the vast black ocean rippling for miles before her.
Unable to gain focus, the young woman closed her eyes tightly, creating her own reality. Only in the mind could one place a horizon to nothingness. Though she could not apply detail, she could now visualize a concrete floor and an endless sky.
Even through the silence of this haunting loneliness, she could not help but feel and invigorating freedom. Vulnerable and alone, she managed to retain an unwavering peacefulness. Once her spirit was eased into the new reality, panic subsided. From girlhood to womanhood, fear was a vital protection that she often times lacked - found only, in her eyes, to be a hindrance.
A faint rapping on the concrete from behind pulled at her ears. Steady breathing slowed as she keenly listened to what sounded like footsteps. Ever so subtly, the woman cocked her head, alertly taking in every faint noise. Applying pace and pressure to each low thump, an image began to take place in her mind - an image that of a man… a broad shouldered towering figure… stealthily creeping up behind her. Remaining calm, she stood as would a deer listening to its stalking cougar.
Eyes wrenched open as razor-like hands grasped both of her wrists from behind. Blinded by an overpowering light, eyes immediately shot closed again; a sudden terror flowing up her spine. Peeling her eyelids open, she spun to face him, her wrists now released. But there was no one… no one but a fleeing shadow.
Curiosity was the first to strike - once again, her sense of danger measuring short. Anxious feet instinctively began to pursue the stranger, but the chase proved hopeless. The figure swiftly faded to white as had everything else. Slowing to a stop only as his transparency was complete, the woman began to feel uneasy. Though she could now see clearly, there was still no separation of earth and sky; each step bringing a new uncertainty.
Alert, her shimmering eyes glanced in every possible direction, only to reveal an infinite void. At a loss for action, she absentmindedly began massaging her bruised wrists. Mind wandering, her thoughts followed the stranger who had left so quickly. She was determined to find him - her only hope for explanations.
Chills ran up her spine as she took her first step into the white sea of emptiness. Any depth perception she may have possessed now drifted away leaving her unsteady, ready to drown at any given moment. Cautiously she moved on to her second step feeling as though she were walking on water. As an unsure foot met the ground that she had placed, a sudden surprise overtook her. She had discovered a hole - a hole that would send her plummeting to her death. Thus, her fall began.
Infinite space swallowed her trembling soul, compressing limbs against body; an outside force pushing the air from her lungs. A suffocating wind rushed past her on this eternal fall, freezing every inch of her smooth white skin. Time - the ultimate captor - was having its way. With each second the plummeting woman came closer to her death.
Everything seemed to freeze - the wind stopped, her heart paused, time halted. As consciousness returned, she realized she had finally met with the ground. Drowsily opening her eyes, she was shocked to find him - his jet black eyes staring into hers. Finally she inhaled a breath of air, dizzily enchanted by his gaze and chilled by the icy breath numbing her cheeks. Had she been in a more conscience state, perhaps she would have feared the evil gleam in his eye - but under current circumstances, she possessed no such emotion. The gentle beating of her heart finally grew consistent, lids growing heavy. His eyes were the last thing she saw upon drifting to a heavy sleep.
Slowly awakening, the woman sat up in pain; every inch of her frail body ached. Forcing herself to her feet, she took a few staggering steps forward. A wondering hand reached the wall, supporting most of her weight. After pulling her trudging feet along, she turned and leaned her back against the cold brick. Stone walls reached a black sheet of sky above; wooden crates stacked against them. This long dark ally appeared to stretch for eternity - no release to the city, but only to imprisonment.
After a long moment, some strength was regained, allowing her to walk. She started forward on a never-ending search for something she knew she would never find - release. With every advance, the end of the eternal stretch seemed to grow farther, yet her pace quickened in shallow hopes of reaching an end. A cold air numbed her skin, only increasing the pain she had already acquired upon her long fall.
Warm hands grasped her shoulders, bringing her to a halt. Heart stopped, her fearlessness weakened by her current state. Spinning around, she expected to find the same black eyes she vaguely remembered before falling to unconsciousness. It was not him - but rather, a kind face wearing a welcoming smile. Involuntarily, the woman fell into his arms, head collapsing on his shoulder, accepting the support. A solitary tear rolled down her cheek, only to be quickly wiped away in pride.
Keeping her in his arms, the stranger brought her away from his shoulder so he could gaze upon her face - her smooth, beautiful face. Gently he brushed the hair from her slender jaw revealing a long thin slice; his touch making it burn. Until now, she had not noticed the cut on her cheek - more intense pain had distracted her. Pushing his hand aside with hers, she ran her finger along the line stretching the entire length of her face. Eyes fell to her blood-soaked hand, a haunting voice suddenly invading her memory. “Such a beautiful face… What a shame.”
Eyes widening, she looked up to the man for an explanation - none to be found. Backing away, she began to turn circles, once again searching in vain for an escape; nothing but wall along an endless path. The warm stranger wrapped his arm around her shoulder, guiding her to an area concealed by the crates. Ducking down, he pulled her petite body against his and whispered in her ear. “You’ll be safe here…for now.”
Her heart trembled as an extreme vulnerability engulfed her being. Here she kneeled, life in the hands of another, relying on him for safety. Her head was too clouded from pain to think clearly. The fall she had taken left her breathless and bruised. Staring into the eyes of the stranger, she attempted to read his every move. His aura held a silent confidence, a chilling evil - yet his expressions revealed otherwise. Eyes appeared friendly and warm, smile offering comfort.
After several moments, the woman felt as though she could safely speak. Perhaps she would not be able to find the fleeing shadow, but possibly the stranger before her held answers.
“Who are you?” she whispered, narrowing her eyes into his. This was the least of her concern, but it seemed the proper way to start. His expression remained warm, but a glance to the ground arose doubt in her anxious mind.
“That is of no importance… you will know soon enough.” His confidence bid her no response. After a slight pause, he continued. “Besides… if I were to return your question out of sheer politeness, you would offer no response. Why should I give you any more?”
Dumbfounded by his arrogance, she shook her head slightly. “I presented the question - I am responsible enough to return the respect of an answer.” With this, the stranger raised his eyebrows in delight.
“Really now? Then who are you?” A satisfied grin spread across his broad lips as spite filled his eyes. The woman parted her lips in an answer with intentions of proving him wrong, but she froze when nothing came. Her mind drew a blank. Not even a name could be found to give him. Perhaps her fall was worse than she had imagined… amnesia? Speechless, her lost eyes darted to the ground, searching as if her identity would lie there.
Smiling, he took her head in his hands, forcing her gaze back to his. His eyes - jet black. Blinking forcefully, she looked into the dark, icy windows before her. His eyes - the same as the ones she had seen… but when? A dreamlike image was burned in her mind - perhaps it was only a dream.
She slowly backed away, catching herself from behind with an outstretched hand. Grabbing her wrists tightly, the stranger pulled her back into his embrace. Such a familiar grasp. Her wrists began to ache, but she cared little - his eyes had latched into hers, gaze now locked. His figure began to transform, slowly molding into a dark towering shadow. He now wore a charcoal hat that shaded his entire face, and a long black trench coat that was slightly too large for even his broad build.
Bringing his face close to hers, she could once again feel his icy breath. It had not been a dream. As she had faded back to unconsciousness after having fallen from the emptiness above, he was there - staring down at her shimmering eyes just as he was now. She could vaguely remember feeling a cold hand caress her skin as her eyes drifted shut. “Such a beautiful face… What a shame.” Weakened beyond caring, she could do nothing when he ran a sharp blade of a finger down her cheek releasing a deep shade of red.
Bright blue eyes continued to gaze into the black ones that held them captive. Oh, how vulnerable she had become. If only she had not let her guard down. Finding herself in the clutches of the enemy, she longed now only for freedom.
“Have you no answer?” His voice ran chills up the back of her neck. She could do - could say nothing. She was paralyzed within his eyes. His grip on her wrists loosened, and soon released - yet, she could still not move. Fighting against an invisible force field, her mental struggles for freedom proved in vain. Nothing had her bound, and yet she still felt the weight of chains and shackles. Very subtly, her toes become cold - no... freezing. The icy sensation inched it's way up to her ankle - to her leg - to her waist - inched it's way until it spread throughout her body. It felt as if the warmth was being sucked from her... as if her soul was being sucked from her...
"Apparently not..." he said with a satisfied grin as she breathed her last warm breath, her eyes becoming a dull gray. Any words she wished to speak were now trapped in her throat - never to be released. Gently, he brushed her silent mouth with his now, warm lips - raising his hand behind her, embracing a jagged dagger ever so dearly. As their lips parted, the glistening blade penetrated her smooth, chilled skin, releasing her freezing blood.
Another quick gasp of air was taken as her faded eyes were finally able to part from his - only to close. Finally... finally she was given release. She fell softly to the ground as he jerked his weapon from her back, blood seeping out and soaking her. There she lie - soul slipping from her being... if it had not already. Her eyes opened once more to see black eyes staring down at her as before - the black eyes that had tormented her to her death.
"Such a beautiful face..." his voice trailed off as a sly grin met the corners of his lips. Returning to his feet, he stared down at the lifeless body, demeanor changing. His eyes softened and a phony frown replaced his grin, head tilting to one side, hands shoved deep in his dark pockets. "What a shame," he said mockingly. With a chuckle, the evil smile returned as he turned and faded into nothing once again...
